The Type A-2 jacket is the most famous military flight jacket ever made.  The Army Air Corps issued it from 1931 to the end of World War II.  Thousands of courageous young Americans fought in the skies of Europe and the Pacific, proudly wearing their A-2 jackets.

As a testament to its extraordinary design, the A-2 was popular among all ranks as well as with non-aviators, too.  General Claire Chennault wore his as the Flying Tigers dominated the air war in Burma and China.  Colonel Jimmy Doolittle wore his when he took off from Hornet to raid Tokyo.  General Douglas MacArthur, though not an aviator, wore his when the 8th Army stormed ashore at Inchon.

The G-1 jacket is one of the most coveted possessions of Naval Aviators.  Most G-ls are covered with squadron, carrier, and aircraft patches from the aviator's duty assignments.

First issued in 1938 as the M422 and renamed the AN-J-3a in 1943, the Navy’s famous flight jacket became the G-1 in 1951.

Gibson & Barnes follows the original Navy specifications and patterns for the G-1. We make it from large drum-dyed, semi-aniline goatskins and use genuine mouton (lamb’s wool) for the collar, rib knit for the cuffs and waistband, and a heavy solid brass zipper.

Gibson & Barnes has combined the front of the Air Force A-2 with the back of the Navy G-1 to create an even better F-82 flight jacket.

The F-82 has the A-2’s precisely stitched pockets with gracefully-curved snap-shut flaps. Its A-2 storm flap keeps out the wind and its solid brass zipper with authentic bell pull and leather thong zips smoothly and securely. The leather collar snaps down just like the A-2, and the epaulets are sewn in a regulation A-2 box-stitch.

The F-82 has the Navy G-1’s belted, bi-swing, action back sewn in both the leather and the lining to give you complete lateral movement and the G-1’s double gusset under each arm to allow you greater vertical reach.
